Shopify Development for Ecommerce & D2C Brands

Shopify stores for D2C brands: themes, apps, markets and integrations chosen so the store stays fast and your own team can run it without a developer.

Shopify Development for Ecommerce & D2C Brands

What we do for ecommerce & d2c brands.

Quavento Technologies develops Shopify stores for direct-to-consumer brands and online sellers: new builds, redesigns, theme customisation, app and integration work, speed repair and moves from other platforms. Our team is in Pune, India. We build for Indian brands directly and for brands selling to American customers remotely.

Our general Shopify development services are described separately. This page is about D2C brands. Shopify takes away a lot of work, including hosting, security updates and the core checkout. What remains is a set of choices that decide whether the store stays quick and manageable or turns, within two years, into a slow tangle of apps and patched code. Most of the Shopify stores we are asked to rescue have the same cause: choices made one at a time, without a plan.

This page covers those choices: which theme, which apps, how to handle two markets, when to customise and when to leave things alone. The wider picture is on our ecommerce and D2C hub. We have not published case studies in this industry yet, and we do not cite Shopify store clients.

Guide

What you should know.

Is Shopify the right platform for a D2C brand?

Often, but not always, and we will tell you which. Shopify suits brands that want to start selling quickly, have a catalogue of a few to a few thousand products and want a small team to operate the store day to day. The platform looks after hosting, certificates, the checkout and many security tasks, which is real value for a young brand.

It suits less well a business that needs a heavily unusual checkout, deep control of the database or its own hosting. In those cases a custom build or WooCommerce may fit better. Our comparison of Shopify and WooCommerce in India sets out the trade-offs, and the guide to Shopify pricing in India explains what the subscription covers and which costs arrive later, through apps and transaction fees.

If Shopify is the right choice, the rest of this page applies. If it is not, our ecommerce development page for this industry discusses the alternatives.

Should we use a ready theme or a custom one?

For most new brands, a well-made ready theme with careful customisation is the better start. It is tested across devices, it is kept up to date by its author and it lets you launch sooner and for less. Our Shopify theme customisation work adjusts typography, layouts, product page blocks and navigation to the brand without breaking the theme's ability to update.

A custom theme is worth it when the brand's experience is its edge: a guided product finder, a build-your-own bundle, or a layout that no ready theme offers. It takes longer, costs more and then has to be maintained by someone who understands it. The page on custom Shopify theme development explains what that involves.

Our test is simple. If three or four changes to a good theme deliver the design, we do that. If we would be fighting the theme on every page, we build a clean one.

How do we keep a store editable by your own team?

By building pages out of sections and structured fields rather than hard-coded text. Modern Shopify themes let a merchandiser rearrange sections on the home page, add a banner, change a collection layout or fill in extra product information such as ingredients, size charts or care instructions, all from the admin and without a developer.

We set up custom fields for the information your products need, so that every product page shows it in the same place. We write a short guide for your team, with screenshots of your own store, that covers the weekly jobs: adding a product, running a sale, editing the home page, handling a discount code.

The goal is that you call us for new capabilities rather than for changes of text. A store that needs a developer to swap a banner will be updated less often and will drift out of date.

  • Sections for home and landing pages that your team can rearrange.
  • Custom fields for ingredients, sizes, materials or specifications.
  • Reusable templates for different kinds of product.
  • A written guide for routine tasks, using your own store.
  • Staff accounts with only the permissions each person needs.

How many apps is too many?

Fewer than most stores have. Each app can add scripts to every page, a monthly fee and one more thing that can break after an update. Over time a store collects apps for reviews, popups, bundles, upsells, loyalty, wishlists and countdown timers, and loads slower with each one.

We audit apps one by one. For each we ask what it does, what it costs over a year, whether Shopify or the theme already does the same thing, and how much it slows the page. Apps that earn their place stay. Others are replaced with a few lines of theme code or removed entirely. Removing an app properly also means cleaning up leftover code it left in the theme.

Where a genuinely needed capability has no good app, we can write one. Our Shopify app development page describes private and public apps. For a new store, we start with the essentials only and add apps as the numbers justify them.

How do we set up Shopify for India, the USA or both?

With markets, which is Shopify's way of selling to different regions from a single store, with each region having its own currency, language, pricing and shipping rules. For an Indian brand that starts to sell in the USA, that avoids running a second store.

The details differ by market and we confirm each against the platform and your advisers. For India they usually include rupee pricing, tax-inclusive prices, GST details on invoices, UPI and cash on delivery and a courier aggregator. For the USA they include dollar pricing, sales tax collected where you are required to, carrier rates, a clear returns policy and wallets and cards. Which payment providers are available to a store depends on the country where the business is registered, so we check that before design starts.

Our Shopify integrations page covers the connected systems. For shoppers, the point is simple: prices, delivery times and policies should look as though the store was built for them.

How do we make a Shopify store faster?

By finding what is actually slow, which is nearly always images, third-party scripts and heavy theme code. We measure the main templates on a mid-range phone, list the biggest costs and fix them in order. Oversized hero images, videos that load before they are needed, fonts that block rendering and tracking tags added over the years are the usual causes.

Replacing the theme is rarely the answer. Removing three unused apps and compressing images often gains more than a redesign. We re-measure after each change so that you can see what helped.

The method is described on our Shopify speed optimisation page, and the Core Web Vitals guide explains the figures Google reports. We do not promise a particular score, because results depend on your theme, your apps and your visitors' devices.

What are the limits of Shopify, and how do we work within them?

Every platform has them, and knowing them early saves money. Shopify controls the core of the checkout, so changes to it are limited to what the platform allows. The addresses of products and collections follow a fixed pattern, which affects how you plan search optimisation. The number of variants per product is capped, which matters for highly configurable goods.

When a brand outgrows these limits there are routes. Shopify Plus gives larger stores more control over the checkout and more automation tools. A headless build separates the storefront from Shopify's back end, at a higher cost in development and upkeep, and we only suggest it for a clear reason.

Most D2C brands never need either. We would rather build the store you need now very well and tell you in writing what would trigger a move, so that you are not paying for capacity you will not use. That written note usually lists a few signals to watch, such as a catalogue that no longer fits the variant limits, a checkout requirement the standard flow cannot meet, or an operations team spending hours each week on tasks a higher plan would automate.

What happens after launch?

A store is never finished. Themes and apps are updated, products change, campaigns need landing pages and some of the assumptions you launched with prove wrong. We stay close for the first weeks, watching orders, payments and errors, and then hand over with the guide and a record of every app and setting.

From there you can run the store yourself, call us for individual jobs or take a monthly maintenance plan. Whatever you choose, the Shopify account, the domain and the data are yours, and you can add or remove anyone from the staff list at any time.

We should also be plain about proof. We have not published a Shopify case study. What we can show is related websites for other industries, such as Shriram Industries, which is a catalogue site and not a store, so you can judge how we build. Questions are welcome on our contact page.

Pricing & engagement

How do pricing and engagement work?

Shopify builds and redesigns are quoted as a fixed price against a written scope and paid in milestones. Speed repair and app audits can be quoted separately, and ongoing maintenance runs as a monthly plan. We quote in rupees for Indian brands and in US dollars for brands in the United States. We do not publish prices, because a theme customisation for a small catalogue and a custom theme with several integrations are different projects. The main factors are the number of templates, the custom features, the integrations and the markets. The Shopify subscription, apps, themes and payment fees are paid by you directly to those providers, and the store account is in your name from day one.
