Brochure & Catalogue Design

What is Brochure & Catalogue Design?

A brochure or catalogue is often the document a buyer keeps. After the trade show, the site visit or the sales meeting, it is the thing that goes back to the office, gets forwarded to the purchase manager on WhatsApp or sits on the desk while three quotations are compared. If it is cluttered, vague or hard to follow, it weakens everything the salesperson said. If it is clear, credible and easy to navigate, it keeps selling long after the meeting ends.

Good brochure and catalogue design is less about decoration and more about structure. What does the reader need to know first? Which products, services or proofs matter most? How can a buyer find the right model, size or specification quickly? How do the pages look as a printed booklet, and how do they read on a phone screen when shared as a PDF? These questions shape the layout, the typography, the images and the way content is organised.

Quavento designs company brochures and corporate profiles, sales brochures, service leaflets, product catalogues, price lists, real estate project brochures, school and college prospectuses, trade show handouts and digital brochures. We help structure and write the content from your information where needed, organise product data for catalogues, design print-ready artwork with correct bleed, colour and paper specifications, and produce lightweight PDFs for email and WhatsApp. We never invent capabilities, certifications or client names; every claim comes from information you provide. For brand consistency across all documents, see our brand guidelines service.

Guide

What should you know about Brochure & Catalogue Design?

What is the difference between a brochure and a catalogue?

A brochure introduces a company, service or offer and persuades the reader to take the next step. It is usually short, from a single folded sheet to perhaps twenty pages. A catalogue lists products in an organised way, with images, specifications, codes and sometimes prices, so buyers can choose and order. Catalogues can run to dozens or hundreds of pages.

Many businesses need both: a company brochure or corporate profile for first meetings, and a product catalogue for buyers comparing options.

Do businesses still need printed brochures?

In many industries, yes. Printed brochures remain important at trade shows, exhibitions, site visits, showrooms, school admission counters, hospital reception areas and dealer meetings. A well-printed brochure also signals quality and permanence.

At the same time, most brochures in India are now shared digitally, often as a PDF on WhatsApp or email. We design for both: print-ready files for the printer and a compressed, mobile-friendly PDF for sharing.

What should a company brochure include?

A company brochure or corporate profile usually includes these sections, adapted to your audience.

  • Introduction: who you are and what you do, in a few clear sentences.
  • What you offer: products, services or solutions, grouped logically.
  • Why choose you: differentiators with proof, such as certifications, experience or process.
  • Capabilities: facilities, machinery, team, technology or geographic reach.
  • Clients and industries: sectors served and client names, where permitted.
  • Process: how working with you looks, step by step.
  • Contact: clear contact details, locations, website and QR code.

How do you design a product catalogue buyers can use easily?

Buyers use catalogues to find, compare and specify products. Good catalogues organise products into logical categories, use consistent page layouts, include a contents page and index, show clear product images, present specifications in tables and use product codes that match your ordering system.

Consider a Rajkot manufacturer of brass fittings with 400 products. The catalogue groups items by application, such as plumbing, electrical and sanitary, uses colour-coded section tabs, shows each product with its code, sizes and materials in a table, and includes a quick reference index by code at the back. A distributor in Kenya or a contractor in Hyderabad can find the right part in seconds and send the code with their order.

Which brochure formats are most common?

Format depends on content and use.

  • Single sheet or flyer: one or two sides, for simple offers and events.
  • Bi-fold: one sheet folded in half, creating four panels.
  • Tri-fold: one sheet folded into three panels, popular for services and clinics.
  • Z-fold and gate-fold: alternative folds for a more distinctive reveal.
  • Booklet: multiple pages stapled (saddle-stitched) or bound, for company profiles and catalogues.
  • Perfect-bound catalogue: glued spine for thicker catalogues.
  • Digital brochure: PDF or interactive document designed for screens.

Why do booklet page counts need to be multiples of four?

Saddle-stitched booklets are made by folding sheets in half and stapling them along the fold. Each folded sheet creates four pages, so the total page count, including covers, must be a multiple of four, such as 8, 12, 16 or 20 pages. Planning content to fit these counts avoids blank pages or last-minute cuts. Perfect-bound catalogues have more flexibility but still follow printer-specific rules.

What print specifications matter for brochures?

Print quality depends on correct files and sensible material choices. Files should be in CMYK colour mode, with images at around 300 dpi at final size, a bleed of usually 3 mm beyond the trim edge and important text kept inside a safe margin. Paper weight, measured in GSM, affects feel and durability: lighter art paper for inner pages, heavier board for covers.

Finishes such as matte or gloss lamination, spot UV, foil and embossing can add impact on covers. We provide specifications and recommend asking your printer for a proof before a large print run.

How should a brochure look on WhatsApp and mobile screens?

Many Indian buyers first see a brochure as a PDF on WhatsApp. Large file sizes may fail to download on slow connections, and small text becomes unreadable on phones. We create a separate digital version, compressed for fast sharing, with text large enough to read when zoomed and important information near the top of each page.

Interactive PDFs can include a clickable contents page, links to the website and product pages, and buttons that open WhatsApp chat or dial the sales number directly, turning the brochure into a small sales tool.

How is a real estate brochure different?

Real estate brochures must build aspiration while giving accurate, verifiable information. They typically include the project concept, location advantages with a map, master plan, floor plans with dimensions, amenities, specifications, the developer's background and RERA registration details. Artistic impressions should be clearly labelled, and promises about amenities or timelines must match approved plans. We design from your approved information and include necessary disclaimers.

What makes brochure copy effective?

Effective brochure copy is specific and reader-focused. Instead of "We are a leading company committed to excellence", it says what you do, for whom, and what makes you different, with evidence. Headlines should be meaningful even for someone who only skims. Short paragraphs, clear subheadings, bullet points and captions help readers find what matters.

A school prospectus, for example, is more convincing when it describes the actual student-teacher ratio, the specific sports facilities and a typical day, than when it lists vague phrases about holistic development. Our copywriting service can help where copy needs deeper work.

How important are photographs in brochures?

Images often decide whether a brochure feels premium or amateur. Real photographs of your facility, team, products and projects build more trust than generic stock images. Consistent lighting, framing and colour make the brochure feel cohesive.

Where your current images are weak, we can prepare a photography brief or arrange product photography. Where stock images are needed, we select ones that fit your identity and avoid clichés.

How do you design brochures for trade shows?

Trade show visitors collect many brochures and remember few. A trade show handout should grab attention quickly, communicate the key offer on the cover, include a clear call to action such as a QR code for the full catalogue, and be light enough to carry. Many exhibitors pair a short printed leaflet with a detailed digital catalogue shared by QR code or WhatsApp after the conversation, which reduces printing costs and captures contact details.

What brochure design mistakes should be avoided?

These mistakes are common.

  • Too much text, with no clear hierarchy or headings.
  • Generic claims and stock images that could belong to any company.
  • Low-resolution images that look blurry when printed.
  • Missing bleed, causing white edges after trimming.
  • Very large PDFs that fail to open on phones.
  • Outdated product data or prices in catalogues.
  • No clear call to action or contact details.
