Custom Shopify apps
Private apps for one merchant or organisation, built to automate processes, connect systems or add features specific to how your business works.
Custom Shopify apps for your own store and public apps for the Shopify App Store, built on Shopify’s current APIs, extensions and quality standards.
Shopify apps extend what a store can do. Some are built for a single business, to connect Shopify with an ERP, automate an internal process or add a feature no existing app offers. Others are public apps listed on the Shopify App Store, sold to thousands of merchants as a product. Both types use the same foundations: Shopify’s APIs, webhooks, app extensions and, increasingly, Shopify Functions that run custom logic inside Shopify itself. Our Shopify app development covers both.
Building a good Shopify app is more than calling an API. Apps must authenticate securely, handle webhooks reliably, respect API rate limits, integrate cleanly with themes and checkout through supported extension points, and, for public apps, meet Shopify’s App Store requirements for performance, privacy, billing and user experience. Shopify’s platform also evolves quickly; for example, the GraphQL Admin API is now the recommended API for new apps, and older checkout customisation methods are being replaced.
We design and develop custom apps for Indian merchants and public apps for founders building a Shopify app business. Every app is planned around a clear problem, built with Shopify’s current tools and conventions, tested against real store scenarios and documented so it can be maintained as Shopify changes.

The Shopify App Store has apps for most common needs, and using a well-maintained existing app is usually cheaper and faster than building one. A custom app makes sense when no existing app fits your process, when you need to connect Shopify with a system that has no ready connector, when monthly fees for several overlapping apps add up to more than a focused custom app, or when data and logic must stay under your control.
We review existing options first and recommend a custom build only where it clearly pays off.
A custom app is built for one store or organisation and installed directly, without being listed on the App Store. It can be tailored precisely to one business and does not need to meet App Store listing requirements, though it should still follow Shopify’s security and API best practices.
A public app is a product listed on the Shopify App Store for any merchant to install. It must pass Shopify’s review, support different themes, plans and store sizes, handle billing through Shopify, provide onboarding and support, and comply with privacy requirements, including mandatory data webhooks. Building a public app is building a software business.
Modern Shopify apps typically use the Shopify CLI and app template, App Bridge to embed the app in the Shopify admin, and Shopify’s Polaris design system for a native look. The GraphQL Admin API is the recommended API for reading and writing store data, and Shopify has marked the REST Admin API as legacy for new development. Webhooks notify the app of events such as new orders or product changes.
For storefront and checkout features, theme app extensions and checkout UI extensions replace older methods such as injecting scripts, and Shopify Functions handle custom backend logic.
Shopify Functions are small pieces of custom logic that run inside Shopify’s infrastructure at specific points, such as calculating discounts, choosing delivery options, customising payment methods or validating carts. Because they run on Shopify, they are fast and reliable during traffic spikes.
Apps use Functions when business rules must affect checkout directly: bundle and tiered discounts, restricting cash on delivery by order value or location, or enforcing quantity rules for wholesale. Functions are replacing many uses of the older Shopify Scripts.
Older apps often injected JavaScript and edited theme files directly, which slowed stores down and left code behind after uninstalling. Theme app extensions solve this: features are delivered as app blocks that merchants place in sections, or app embeds that load globally, all managed from the theme editor. When the app is removed, its blocks disappear cleanly.
We build storefront features this way, keep scripts small and load them only where needed, protecting store speed.
Webhooks tell your app when something happens in the store. They must be verified to confirm they came from Shopify, processed quickly and handled idempotently, because the same event can occasionally arrive more than once. For busy stores, webhooks should be queued and processed in the background, with retries and monitoring, so spikes in orders do not overwhelm the app or lose data.
Public apps go through Shopify’s review before listing. Reviewers check functionality, security, performance, user experience, billing, privacy compliance and listing accuracy. Apps must handle installation and uninstallation cleanly, use Shopify’s Billing API for charges, respond to privacy webhooks and avoid practices such as editing themes without permission.
Shopify also runs a quality programme, Built for Shopify, recognising apps that meet higher standards for performance, design and integration. We plan these requirements from the start rather than discovering them at submission.
Public apps bill merchants through Shopify’s Billing API, which supports recurring subscriptions, usage-based charges and one-time purchases, with free trials if desired. Charges appear on the merchant’s Shopify invoice, and Shopify pays app developers according to its revenue share terms. We implement billing flows, plan changes and usage tracking, and advise on pricing models based on your target merchants.
Apps often access orders, customers and addresses, so security and privacy must be designed in. We request only the access scopes the app genuinely needs, store tokens and secrets securely, encrypt sensitive data, keep logs free of personal information where possible and delete data when merchants uninstall or customers request it. Public apps must also respond to Shopify’s mandatory privacy webhooks for customer data requests and deletion.
Shopify runs Functions and extensions on its own infrastructure, but the app’s backend, database and admin interface are hosted by the developer on a cloud provider. We choose hosting based on expected installs, data volumes and reliability needs, set up monitoring and backups, and document the infrastructure. For custom apps, hosting accounts are created in your business’s name.
Shopify releases new API versions on a regular schedule and retires older ones, and it periodically deprecates features in favour of new ones. Apps need maintenance to stay compatible: upgrading API versions, adopting new extension points and responding to platform announcements, including the features Shopify showcases in its twice-yearly Editions. A maintenance plan prevents unpleasant surprises when older versions stop working.
Common requests include integrations with Tally or other ERPs, courier and warehouse workflows, GST invoice generation in specific formats, WhatsApp order notifications and confirmations, COD verification flows, B2B ordering tools, custom loyalty or referral programmes and reports combining Shopify data with other systems. Our Shopify integrations service covers connection-focused projects.
These problems cause many app failures.
Describe the problem the app solves and who will use it, list the data it needs to read or change, identify any external systems it must connect to and gather examples of existing apps you like or dislike. For public apps, bring your view of target merchants, pricing and competitors. A development store and clear success measures help the project move quickly.
The main factors are custom versus public app, the number of features and admin screens, integrations with external systems, use of Functions and extensions, data volumes and performance needs, billing and onboarding for public apps, App Store review preparation and ongoing maintenance and hosting.
Custom apps are usually quoted as fixed-price projects. Public apps are often built as a first version followed by ongoing product development on a sprint or retainer basis. Hosting and third-party service costs are billed to accounts in your name.
Yes. We build custom apps for single stores or organisations to automate processes, connect systems or add features existing apps do not offer.
Yes. We build public apps with billing, onboarding, privacy compliance and App Store review requirements planned from the start.
We use the GraphQL Admin API for new apps, as Shopify recommends, along with the Storefront API, webhooks, extensions and Functions where relevant.
Custom logic that runs inside Shopify for discounts, delivery and payment customisations and cart validation, fast enough for peak traffic.
We use theme app extensions and load scripts only where needed, so storefront features stay light and are removed cleanly if the app is uninstalled.
Simple custom apps can take a few weeks; public apps and complex integrations typically take two to four months for a first version.
For custom apps, your business owns the code and hosting accounts. For public app products, ownership follows our agreement with you, normally with full ownership transferred.
