We work remotely from Pune, India, hold calls between 8 am and 11 am Central Time and quote in US dollars.
Houston's small brands draw on one of the richest food cultures in the country and a customer base that speaks many languages. Barbecue rubs and hot sauces, tamales and pastries, coffee, tea and spices from four continents. Western wear for a city that still holds one of the world's largest rodeos. Boutiques scattered across suburbs that are an hour apart.
Shopify lets a small team sell all of that from one system, online and at the counter. This page explains how we set it up for Houston merchants and what needs particular care here.

Spanish, Vietnamese and other languages written by native speakers.
One inventory across several shops, with pickup from the nearest one.
Seasonal shipping profiles for food and other products that suffer in a Texas summer.
Accounts, price lists and standing orders for restaurants and retailers.
Local rates, tax-free weekends and storm messaging configured.
Businesses that make or choose their own products and sell them to people. Shopify handles hosting, security, payments and checkout, so a family business with no technical staff can run a proper store, and it stays up when a feature or a festival sends a rush of visitors.
Here that covers sauce, rub and spice makers, bakeries and tamale makers, coffee roasters and tea importers, western wear and boot shops, boutiques, jewelry and gift shops, specialty and international grocers, beauty brands, and makers selling at the region's many markets.
It fits less well for industrial distributors with tens of thousands of parts and contract pricing held in an ERP. For those, see our ecommerce development in Houston page.
With Shopify's language features and a theme designed for them. Shopify can publish a store in several languages, each with its own page addresses, and tells search engines which is which. What it cannot do is write well or make a layout cope with longer text.
We design templates with every language in view. Product titles, descriptions, policies, emails and checkout messages are written by native speakers, not left to automatic translation. For food, product names appear in the original language and in English, since customers search both ways. Apps are checked one by one, because a reviews widget or pop-up that stays in English spoils the effect.
Vietnamese needs fonts that display its accent marks properly, and we test on real phones. Customer messages go out in the language the customer shopped in. Support through the messaging apps a community uses is often expected. Before launch you review each language, and we check that the phone is answered in it.
With rules that change by season. For five months of the year, a parcel left on a Houston porch or in a delivery truck gets hot enough to melt chocolate, spoil cured or baked goods and separate sauces. Humidity adds its own damage.
Shopify lets us group sensitive products into their own shipping profile. In the hot months those items can require faster services, an insulated mailer or cold pack added at a stated cost, and no dispatch late in the week, so nothing sits in a depot over a weekend. A note on the product page explains why. The rules switch on and off by date.
Shelf-stable products, such as dry rubs, bottled sauces and spices, travel well and suit subscriptions and gift boxes. Pages list ingredients and allergens, matching the label. Meat products shipped across state lines fall under federal inspection rules, and home kitchen producers work under the state's cottage food law, which limits what may be sold and how.
As one business with several doors. Houston is so spread out that a successful shop often opens a second and third location in different suburbs, such as the Heights, Katy and Sugar Land, each an hour from the others.
Shopify's point of sale gives each shop its own stock count while customers and products are shared. Staff can see what another location holds and transfer it. Online, a customer sees which shop has the item and chooses to collect from the nearest, which matters when the alternative is a long drive. Orders can also be fulfilled from whichever location is closest to the delivery address.
Sales tax in Texas includes local components that differ by city and district, so each shop is set up with its own rate. Reports show sales by location and channel. Returns and gift cards work at any shop or online. We set up locations, staff permissions and hardware, and make sure each counter can keep selling through a brief outage.
Well in advance. For a few weeks each late winter the rodeo and livestock show takes over the city, and demand for boots, hats, denim, belts and western shirts peaks sharply. Other peaks follow the calendar: quinceañera and wedding seasons, football season, Lunar New Year and Diwali for community retailers, and the winter holidays for everyone.
We prepare collections and landing pages ahead of each period and schedule them to appear. Stock is checked against the shelf. Sizing guidance is made as good as possible, since fit is the main cause of returns for boots and hats. Pickup and local delivery are emphasized for last-minute shoppers.
Texas holds sales tax holidays, including a weekend before the school year when clothing, footwear and school supplies under a set price are not taxed, and another for emergency preparation supplies. Shopify applies these when qualifying products are tagged and the dates are set, which we configure and test.
Yes, from the same store. Many Houston producers supply restaurants, cafes, grocers and gift shops alongside their consumer business: a roaster selling to coffee shops, a tortilla maker supplying taquerias, a sauce brand stocked across the state.
Trade customers get an account with their own prices, minimum quantities and delivery days. They reorder from a saved list in a few taps and receive a proper invoice. Standing orders repeat each week. On Shopify Plus this uses the built-in business-to-business features, and on other plans a wholesale app with customer tags does much the same.
Stock is shared with the consumer store. Resale certificates are recorded so trade orders are not taxed. A stockist locator on the site sends consumers to the shops that carry the product, which retailers appreciate and which helps when a brand is trying to get into larger chains.
Through social media, with the store ready to catch the traffic. Houston's boutiques and beauty and fashion brands build audiences on Instagram and TikTok, often in two languages, and many work with local creators.
Products are synced to those platforms so they can be tagged and bought from a post. Each creator gets a code or a link, sales are attributed and commissions calculated. Federal rules require anyone paid or given free products to say so clearly in the post, and they hold the brand responsible too, so a short written agreement with each creator is sensible.
The store has to load quickly on a phone and make sizing and returns clear. Photography and video are compressed and loaded only as needed. Local customers are offered pickup and delivery. Email and text sign-ups are collected with consent, since promotional texts require it under federal law, and the list becomes an audience the brand owns.
Tax, storm readiness, privacy and accessibility. Shopify calculates Texas sales tax, state and local, by location once your registration is configured. Local rates differ across the metro, and shipped orders follow the state's sourcing rules. Your accountant should confirm the setup.
For hurricane season we prepare an announcement bar, extended delivery estimates and a message to customers with open orders, ready to switch on from a phone. Shopify itself keeps running. What stops is local dispatch. Prices on necessities must not be raised unreasonably during a declared disaster, which Texas law prohibits.
Texas has a privacy law that gives residents rights over their data and requires covered businesses to honor browser opt-out signals. We configure the store's privacy settings so that advertising tags really are switched off when a customer opts out. Themes are built to WCAG 2.2 level AA and tested by hand, since online stores are frequent targets of accessibility claims.
On a development store you can open at any time. We review your products, locations, languages and current sales, agree a written scope, design the main pages and build. Before launch we place test orders in each language, for each location, for pickup, delivery, shipping and wholesale, and check tax, emails and stock.
A custom theme is worth it when the brand's look is distinctive. For a first store, a well-configured existing theme is often enough, and we say so. Apps are kept few, since each adds cost and slows the store.
Calls are between 8 am and 11 am Central, and changes requested in your afternoon are usually ready by morning. You own the Shopify account, the domain and the payment accounts. We are based in Pune and have no office in Houston, so photography should be arranged locally. Growth through search is covered on our SEO services in Houston page. A Shopify build is quoted as a fixed price in US dollars against a written scope and paid in milestones. The price depends on whether the theme is custom or configured, the number of products, languages, point of sale locations, wholesale features and any integrations. Shopify's subscription, payment processing fees, apps and hardware are paid by you directly. Speed audits and ongoing improvements are available as fixed-price projects or a monthly plan. We do not publish prices because stores vary so much, but each proposal lists the work, including translation, and the running costs to expect.
Our team works from Pune, India. We do not have a US office, so every project is run remotely with a named project manager, a weekly call and written updates. These are the hours we keep for calls with US clients.
