Shopify Development Company in San Jose, CA

What we do for businesses in San Jose.

Quavento Technologies builds and improves Shopify stores for businesses in San Jose, California. We design themes, structure product data, configure shipping, tax and payments, connect the systems a store depends on and train your team to run it. We work remotely from Pune, India, hold calls in Pacific Time windows and quote in US dollars.

A typical San Jose Shopify project is unlike one for a fashion brand. The founder is an engineer. The product has firmware. There is a waitlist of several thousand people from a crowdfunding campaign, a contract manufacturer with a slipping date, and an expectation that the store will talk to an ERP by the end of the quarter.

Shopify handles this well when it is set up by people who understand both the platform and the kind of company using it. This page explains how we approach it, along with the specialty retailers who make up the other half of the city's online sellers.

Guide

What you should know in San Jose.

Who is Shopify right for in San Jose?

Companies selling their own physical products to end customers. That includes consumer hardware startups, makers of device accessories, audio and smart home brands, electric mobility and fitness equipment companies, and the specialty food, tea, coffee and gift sellers rooted in the city's communities.

For an engineering-led company the attraction is that commerce is somebody else's problem. Hosting, payments, checkout, fraud screening and tax calculation are handled, and the team can spend its effort on the product. Shopify's interfaces are well documented, so custom needs can be met without fighting the platform.

It is a weaker fit for distributors with very large parts catalogs and contract pricing held in an ERP. For those, see our ecommerce development in San Jose page.

How should a hardware startup run pre-orders?

Honestly, above all. Selling a product before it exists is normal for hardware, and it carries obligations. Federal rules on mail and online orders require a seller to have a reasonable basis for any shipping date it states, to ship within that time, and if it cannot, to tell the customer and offer the choice of a refund.

We set up pre-orders so the estimated ship date is shown on the product page, in the cart and in the confirmation, and can be updated in one place. Customers can be charged in full, charged a deposit or have payment authorized later, depending on your cash needs and risk. If the date slips, a message goes to every affected customer with a simple way to cancel.

Backers from a crowdfunding campaign are usually brought in through a pledge manager or by importing orders, so that fulfillment runs through one system. A waitlist for those who are not ready to pay keeps their interest. When the product ships, the same store carries on as the ordinary sales channel.

  • Ship estimate shown everywhere and updated centrally.
  • Full payment, deposit or deferred charge.
  • Delay notices with an easy refund option.
  • Crowdfunding backers merged into one order system.
  • Waitlist for customers not yet ready to buy.

How do you present technical products on Shopify?

With structured data behind the page. The usual mistake is to paste a specification table into the description field. It looks acceptable and cannot be filtered, compared, reused or read reliably by search engines.

We define metafields for each attribute that matters, such as dimensions, weight, connectivity, battery capacity, compatible models and certifications, and build the product template to display them. The same data then drives filters on collection pages, comparison tables, compatibility checkers and the feeds sent to shopping channels.

Variants are planned carefully. Color, capacity, region and bundle options multiply quickly, and Shopify's limits and the customer's patience both need respecting. Accessories and replacement parts are linked to the devices they fit. Manuals, firmware notes and regulatory documents are attached to the product so support does not have to send them by email.

When is a headless Shopify storefront worth it?

Less often than engineers expect. A headless build uses Shopify for the back end and checkout while the storefront is a separate application, often built with Shopify's Hydrogen framework or Next.js. It offers complete control over the experience and can share components with a marketing site or web application.

It also means the team now owns a front-end application: hosting, performance, preview environments, and rebuilding features that a standard theme and its apps provide for nothing. For a company with front-end engineers and a clear reason, such as a product configurator, an integrated account area for a connected device or a site that is mostly content with a small shop, it can be the right call.

For most stores, a well-built theme on Shopify's current architecture is faster to launch, cheaper to maintain and just as quick for the customer. We will give you a straight recommendation and the reasoning, and build either.

Which integrations do growing brands need?

The ones that remove manual work as volume grows. In the early days a founder can copy orders into a spreadsheet. At a few hundred orders a day, nobody can.

The common connections are to an ERP or accounting system such as NetSuite or QuickBooks for orders, inventory and revenue; to a third-party logistics provider or warehouse system for fulfillment and tracking; to a support desk so agents see order history; and to a returns platform. Connected devices often need the store to talk to the product's own cloud, to attach a purchase to an account or activate a subscription.

We use established connectors where they are reliable and build custom integrations on Shopify's interfaces where they are not. Every integration has monitoring, so a failed sync is noticed before a customer notices it. Larger integration work is described on our custom software for San Jose page.

How do subscriptions work for devices and consumables?

In two forms. Some products use up supplies, such as filters, cartridges, pods or refills, and customers are glad to have them arrive on schedule. Others pair hardware with a paid service, where the device is bought once and features are billed monthly.

Physical subscriptions run through a Shopify subscription app. Service subscriptions are usually billed by the product's own system, with the store handing over the customer at the point of sale. Either way, California's Automatic Renewal Law applies to consumers here: terms shown clearly before purchase, affirmative consent, a confirmation that explains how to cancel, and cancellation available online.

We make the offer plain on the product page, including what the device does without the subscription, which buyers of connected hardware increasingly ask. Customers can skip, pause or cancel from their account. Clear terms cost a few sign-ups and save a great many refunds.

How do specialty food and community retailers use Shopify?

As one system for the shop, local orders and shipping. San Jose's Vietnamese coffee roasters, Mexican bakeries, Asian grocers, tea merchants and sweet shops have loyal local customers and a wider audience online.

We set up pickup and local delivery by ZIP code with realistic preparation times, shipping rules for perishable items and seasonal collections for holidays such as Lunar New Year. Shopify's point of sale keeps the counter and the website on one inventory. The storefront can be offered in Vietnamese, Spanish or Chinese as well as English, with product names in both, written by native speakers.

Food products need ingredients and allergens on the page, and some packaged goods need a Proposition 65 warning for California buyers. Corporate gift orders, common in the Valley before the holidays, are worth a dedicated page with bulk pricing and multiple delivery addresses.

What California requirements does the store need to meet?

Several at once. The advertised price must include mandatory fees. Covered electronic devices carry a state recycling fee that is collected at sale and shown separately. Products containing listed chemicals need a Proposition 65 warning before purchase. Batteries have shipping restrictions that should be enforced by shipping profiles, not left to staff.

Sales tax combines a statewide rate with district taxes that vary by delivery address, and Shopify calculates it once your registrations are configured. Your accountant should confirm the setup.

Accessibility and privacy apply to every store. We build themes to WCAG 2.2 level AA and test with keyboard and screen reader, because California's civil rights law adds statutory damages to accessibility claims. Privacy controls are set so that opt-outs really do switch off advertising tags, as the California Consumer Privacy Act requires of businesses above its thresholds.

How does a Shopify project run with a remote team?

In the way an engineering team would expect. Theme code lives in a repository under version control, changes go through pull requests and preview themes, and you can review anything before it is published. We are comfortable working with your developers or acting as the store's engineering team.

We review products, data and systems, agree a written scope, design the key pages and build on a development store. Before launch we place test orders for pre-orders, battery products, pickup and each integration. Calls are held between 8 am and 9 am or 5 pm and 7 pm Pacific, and work requested in your afternoon is usually ready by morning.

You own the Shopify account, the code and the domain. We are based in Pune and have no San Jose office, so product photography should be arranged locally. Growth through search is covered on our SEO services in San Jose page. See also the San Jose overview and our national Shopify development page.

Pricing & engagement

How do pricing and engagement work?

A Shopify build is quoted as a fixed price in US dollars against a written scope and paid in milestones. The price depends on whether the storefront is a configured theme, a custom theme or headless, the complexity of product data, pre-order and subscription setup, the number of integrations and any additional languages. Shopify's subscription, payment processing fees and apps are paid by you directly. Ongoing engineering support is available as a monthly plan. We do not publish prices because stores vary so much, but each proposal lists the work and the running costs to expect.
