DLT done right
Entity, headers and templates are registered accurately, so messages are not blocked for mismatches.
Registered headers, approved templates and reliable routes for OTPs, alerts and promotions, set up correctly so your messages actually get delivered.
SMS remains one of the most reliable ways to reach people in India. It works on every mobile phone, needs no app or internet connection and is read quickly. Businesses rely on it for one-time passwords, order and delivery alerts, appointment reminders, payment confirmations, service notifications and time-sensitive promotions, particularly for audiences in smaller towns and among users who are less active on apps.
Commercial SMS in India is tightly regulated to protect people from spam and fraud. Under the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s commercial communication regulations, businesses must register on a Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) platform operated by telecom operators, register their sender IDs, called headers, register every message template and, for promotional messages, respect customers’ preferences and time restrictions. Messages that do not match registered templates are blocked. Newer requirements, such as whitelisting of links and call-back numbers used in messages, add further checks. Many businesses find their SMS failing without understanding why.
Our bulk SMS marketing services handle this complexity. We guide you through DLT registration, register headers and templates in the right categories, select reliable SMS providers, integrate SMS with your website, app, CRM and ecommerce platform, set up OTP and transactional flows, and plan compliant promotional campaigns. Reports track delivery, clicks and conversions. We also help you decide when SMS is the best channel and when WhatsApp or email would serve customers better.

DLT registration is the process businesses must complete before sending commercial SMS in India. It was introduced under TRAI’s commercial communication regulations to curb spam. Businesses register as principal entities on a DLT platform run by a telecom operator, register their headers or sender IDs, and register the templates of messages they intend to send. Telecom operators check every message against these registrations and block messages that do not match.
A header, often called a sender ID, is the name that appears as the sender, typically a short alphabetic code representing your brand for transactional and service messages, or a numeric header for some promotional messages. A content template is the approved format of a message, with fixed text and variable fields for details such as names, amounts or OTP codes. Templates must closely match the messages you send, including links and numbers.
Messages are classified into categories with different rules.
Promotional SMS can only be sent to people who have not blocked promotional communication through their preference settings, or who have given explicit consent. Promotional messages are also restricted to certain hours of the day, typically daytime hours. Messages must match registered templates and carry an opt-out mechanism where required. Rules evolve, so we check current requirements before each campaign setup.
To reduce fraud, recent TRAI directions require that links, app download links and call-back numbers included in SMS be whitelisted and included in registered templates. Messages containing links or numbers that are not whitelisted may be blocked. This affects campaigns using link shorteners, so we register approved domains and plan tracking links accordingly.
Common causes include template mismatches, where the sent message differs from the registered template; incorrect header or category; unregistered or non-whitelisted links; recipient preference blocks for promotional messages; sending promotional messages outside allowed hours; invalid numbers; and provider route issues. Delivery reports with failure codes help us diagnose and fix problems quickly.
OTPs must arrive within seconds, or users abandon login and checkout. Reliable OTP delivery for login, payments and verification uses high-priority routes, short templates, clear sender IDs and monitoring of delivery times. Fallback options, such as voice OTP, WhatsApp authentication templates or email, help when SMS delays occur. On Android, apps can read OTPs automatically when messages follow the right format, improving user experience.
Useful service messages include order confirmations and delivery updates, appointment and payment reminders, account alerts, service completion notices, booking confirmations and important policy updates. These messages are expected by customers, have high read rates and reduce support calls. They should be short, specific and include only necessary information.
A standard SMS in English can contain up to 160 characters; longer messages are split into parts and charged per part. Messages in Hindi and other Indian scripts use Unicode encoding, which allows fewer characters per part. Concise messages cost less and are read faster, so we keep templates tight while including essential details.
Yes. Unicode SMS supports Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam and other scripts. Templates in these languages must be registered separately. Regional language messages can improve understanding and response among customers who prefer them, though they use more message parts for the same content.
SMS providers offer APIs that let your website, app, ecommerce platform, CRM or billing system send messages automatically when events happen, such as an order being shipped or an appointment being booked. We build and test these integrations, handle errors and retries, and map system events to the correct registered templates. Our marketing automation workflows service coordinates SMS with other channels.
Providers differ in delivery speed and reliability, operator connections, API quality, support, reporting, pricing and features such as OTP fallbacks, WhatsApp integration and link tracking. We evaluate providers against your volumes and use cases, and can set up more than one provider for redundancy on critical messages such as OTPs.
SMS is best for OTPs, critical alerts, reaching customers without smartphones or internet access and messages that must be seen quickly. WhatsApp is better for rich content, conversations and customers who prefer chat. Email suits detailed information and receipts. Many businesses use SMS as a reliable fallback when WhatsApp messages are not delivered.
Rich Communication Services (RCS) is a newer messaging standard that brings rich features such as images, carousels, buttons and verified sender branding to the default messaging app on supported Android phones. Business RCS is growing in India. It can complement SMS for richer promotional and service messages, with SMS as a fallback where RCS is not supported.
We track messages submitted and delivered, delivery times, failure reasons, clicks on tracked links, conversions such as purchases, bookings or payments, opt-outs and cost per conversion. For OTPs, we measure delivery speed and verification success rates. Comparing results by template, time of day and segment shows which messages deserve to be repeated.
These problems are common.
Beyond TRAI rules, India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act expects personal data such as mobile numbers to be processed lawfully and for stated purposes. Clear consent for promotional communication, records of consent, respect for opt-outs and secure handling of phone numbers are essential. This is general guidance; confirm specific obligations with your legal adviser and SMS provider.
Templates must be clear about their purpose and category. Service templates should relate to an existing transaction or relationship and avoid promotional language; promotional templates should be registered as such. Variable fields should be used only for genuinely variable details, such as names, order numbers, dates or amounts, rather than to insert whole sentences. Including the brand name, keeping wording specific and registering exact links and numbers reduces rejections and delivery failures.
Different sectors use SMS in different ways.
Reminders work best when timed thoughtfully: a confirmation at booking, a reminder a day before and a short reminder a few hours before appointments or due dates. Each message should state what, when and where, with a way to reschedule or pay. Well-timed reminders reduce no-shows and late payments without feeling intrusive.
Costs include setup work for DLT registration, templates and integrations, and optional campaign management. SMS credits are charged per message part by providers, with rates depending on category, route and volume. DLT platforms may charge registration and scrubbing fees. Keeping messages short, choosing the right category and avoiding unnecessary sends to unengaged numbers keeps ongoing costs under control.
SMS services start with a setup project covering DLT, provider and integrations, followed by optional campaign management. SMS credits and DLT fees are paid to providers and operators.
