We design and build websites and online stores, develop custom software and mobile apps, and run SEO and advertising. Our team is in Pune, India. We work with Charlotte clients remotely, hold calls between 9 am and 1 pm Eastern Time and invoice in US dollars.

Charlotte has grown from a regional banking town into one of the largest financial centers in the United States, and people have followed the jobs. The region adds residents every day, most of them arriving from other states, and whole suburbs have appeared within a decade.

A city full of newcomers and regulated employers makes particular demands on marketing. This page explains how we approach it, what is unusual about a metropolitan area that spans two states, and how a remote team fits in.

Guide

What you should know in Charlotte.

What makes Charlotte a different market?

Two things: who its employers are and who its residents are. The city is the headquarters of one of the country's largest banks and a major base for several others, along with a large electric utility, insurers and the back offices that serve them. A great many local companies sell to those institutions, which hold their suppliers to strict standards.

Its residents, increasingly, come from somewhere else. Families relocate from the Northeast, the Midwest and the West Coast for work and for lower housing costs. They arrive without a doctor, a dentist, a contractor or a favorite restaurant, and they find all of them by searching.

That combination rewards businesses that are easy to find, look trustworthy and explain themselves clearly. It punishes those that rely on reputation alone, because half the people they want to reach have never heard of them.

Why does the state line matter?

Because the metropolitan area crosses it. Charlotte sits in North Carolina a few miles from the border, and some of its fastest-growing suburbs, including Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Indian Land and Lake Wylie, are in South Carolina. Thousands of people live in one state and work in the other.

For a business, that means two sets of rules. Sales tax rates and what is taxable differ. Contractors need the right license in each state where they work. Insurance, real estate and professional licenses are issued by state. A promotion that is lawful on one side may need different wording on the other.

It affects marketing too. A business that serves both sides should say so plainly and show the licenses it holds in each. Search results and advertising can be targeted by state, and customers often include the town name when they search. We set up sites and campaigns with the border in mind.

  • Different sales tax rates and rules in each state.
  • Separate contractor and professional licenses.
  • Customers who live in one state and work in the other.
  • Service areas stated clearly for both sides.
  • Advertising and search targeted by state where needed.

How is the region laid out?

Around a center that locals call Uptown, not downtown. Close to it are neighborhoods with distinct characters: South End, NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Dilworth, Myers Park and Elizabeth. Farther out are large suburban districts such as Ballantyne, SouthPark, Steele Creek and University City.

To the north, the towns around Lake Norman, including Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville, form their own market. To the east and south lie Matthews, Mint Hill, Waxhaw and Union County. Concord, Gastonia and the South Carolina suburbs complete the ring.

Google's map results favor businesses near the searcher, so one location will be strong nearby and weak across town. A business should decide which parts of the region it serves and build from there. Our SEO services in Charlotte page explains the method.

How do you market to people who have just moved here?

By assuming nothing. A newcomer does not know which neighborhoods are near which, what a fair price is locally, how licensing works in this state or which companies have been around for decades. They compare what they can see: the website, the reviews, the photographs and how easy it is to make contact.

The businesses that win them explain things plainly. A dental practice says which insurance plans it accepts and how to transfer records. A contractor explains what a permit requires here. A school or daycare sets out its calendar and enrollment process. Reviews from other recent arrivals are especially persuasive.

Many people begin searching before they move, from another state. Pages that answer a relocating family's questions, such as what the areas are like and what things cost, rank for those searches and bring customers at the moment they are forming their habits.

What do companies that sell to banks need to know?

That security review comes before the sale. Banks are required by their regulators to manage the risks of the outside companies they work with. In practice, a vendor to a bank faces detailed questionnaires, requests for independent security reports and contract terms about where data is held and who can reach it.

A vendor's website should reflect that it understands this. A clear security page, named contacts, certifications that are actually held and plain descriptions of how data is handled all help a risk officer move the file forward.

For our own part, we are a team in India, and many banks restrict offshore access to their customers' data. We work on the public websites, marketing and internal tools of companies in the financial sector that do not involve such data, and we tell you at the first conversation if a project would cross that line. Our financial services page describes how we work with regulated firms.

Which other industries shape the region?

Energy is one. The electric utility headquartered here and the engineering firms around it employ thousands, and the area has a long history in nuclear and power engineering. Motorsports is another. Most of the country's leading stock car racing teams, and the suppliers and engineering shops that serve them, are based in the towns just north of the city.

Home building and everything that follows it, such as roofing, heating and cooling, landscaping, pools and remodeling, are booming with the population. Healthcare is dominated by two large systems with hospitals and clinics throughout the region. Logistics benefits from a major airline hub and rail yards.

Each needs something different online. A racing supplier needs a technical capability site. A builder needs community pages and lead capture. A clinic needs online booking. Our web design for Charlotte page describes our approach to each.

Which Carolina rules affect websites and stores?

Tax, first. North Carolina's sales tax combines a state rate with county rates, and it extends to some things other states leave alone, including certain digital goods and many repair, maintenance and installation services. South Carolina has its own rates and rules. A business selling or serving across the line needs both handled.

Licensing, second. Both states license general contractors and the main trades, with thresholds and classifications that differ. Customers look for the license, and we display what you hold, in each state, exactly as issued.

Third, accessibility. Businesses everywhere face claims under the Americans with Disabilities Act over websites that people with disabilities cannot use, and banks and large employers ask their suppliers about it. We build to WCAG 2.2 level AA. On tax and legal questions, your advisers decide and we implement.

How does a remote team work with Charlotte?

India is nine and a half hours ahead of Charlotte during daylight saving time and ten and a half hours ahead in winter. Our afternoon and evening overlap with your morning, so we hold calls between 9 am and 1 pm Eastern. You have a named project manager, written updates and a weekly call if you want one.

Work requested at the end of your day is done overnight and is often ready when you start. Many people in Charlotte's banks and technology firms already work with colleagues in India every day, so the rhythm is familiar here.

We have no office in Charlotte or anywhere in the United States, and we do not claim one. Photography, video and events need someone present, and a local partner is the right choice for those. Our page for US businesses explains contracts, payment and ownership.

Where should a Charlotte business start?

With the step where customers are being lost. If people reach your website and leave, the site comes first. If it is sound and few people find it, start with search and your Google profile. If you need customers this month, a narrow advertising campaign with tracking is the fastest route.

For selling products, see our Shopify development for Charlotte and ecommerce development in Charlotte pages. For systems and portals, see custom software, and for phones, mobile app development.

We suggest one defined project at a time, with a written scope and a fixed price. Domains, accounts and code are held in your name. Our guide to choosing a digital marketing agency lists the questions any vendor should answer, and our portfolio shows finished projects.

Pricing & engagement

How do pricing and engagement work?

Websites, stores, apps and software are quoted as a fixed price in US dollars against a written scope and paid in milestones. SEO and advertising management run as monthly retainers with stated deliverables, and advertising budgets are paid by you directly to the platforms. We do not publish prices because a neighborhood practice and a regional builder need very different things. Each proposal itemizes the work. We provide IRS Form W-8BEN-E for your records, and your accountant can confirm how payments to a foreign vendor should be documented.
