What we do for businesses in Los Angeles.

Quavento Technologies builds ecommerce websites for brands in Los Angeles. Our team works remotely from Pune, India, on Shopify, WooCommerce and custom storefronts, with calls in our Pacific Time windows. We design the store, set up products, payments, tax and shipping, connect your fulfillment and accounting systems, and prepare the site for launches that can bring a day's traffic in a minute.

Los Angeles is one of the country's great centers of direct-to-consumer commerce. Apparel, swimwear, skincare, cosmetics, supplements, coffee and snack brands start here, often selling online before they are ever in a shop. Many grow through creators and social video, which brings a particular pattern of traffic: sudden, mobile and impatient.

California also asks more of online sellers than most states. This page explains the state's tax position, the warning, pricing and subscription rules that apply to LA stores, how to handle creator-driven launches and how a remote build is run.

Guide

What you should know in Los Angeles.

How does sales tax work for an LA online store?

California's statewide base sales tax rate is 7.25 percent, and local district taxes add to it. Combined rates in Los Angeles County are among the highest in the state and differ from one city to the next, so an order to Santa Monica and an order to Long Beach may carry different rates. A store must calculate tax from the delivery address, not from a single LA rate.

For sales into other states, the question is economic nexus. Each state sets a threshold of sales, and sometimes transactions, after which an out-of-state seller must register and collect. California's own threshold for sellers based elsewhere is $500,000 in sales in a year, which is useful context if you compare notes with brands outside the state.

We set up the store's tax engine, such as Shopify Tax, or connect a service like Avalara or TaxJar that tracks thresholds and applies the right rate for every address. Registration and filing decisions belong to your accountant. This is general information, not tax advice.

Do Los Angeles stores need Proposition 65 warnings?

Possibly. Proposition 65 requires businesses to warn Californians about significant exposure to chemicals on the state's list of substances known to cause cancer or reproductive harm. The list is long and includes substances found in some cosmetics, supplements, foods, ceramics, textiles, electronics and many other products. Businesses with fewer than ten employees are generally exempt, but retailers often pass the requirement on to their suppliers.

For online sales, the warning or a clearly marked link to it must be shown on the product page or otherwise before the purchase is completed, in addition to any warning on the package. Showing a blanket warning on every product is a common reaction, but it can confuse customers and may not satisfy the rules for the products that genuinely need it.

We add a warning field to each product, so that the correct text appears automatically where your compliance adviser says it is required and nowhere else. Whether a product needs a warning is a question for your supplier and adviser, and we build the display to match their decision.

What does California's honest pricing law mean for a store?

Since July 1, 2024, California has prohibited drip pricing, meaning a business may not advertise or display a price that leaves out mandatory fees or charges, other than government taxes and shipping costs. If every customer must pay a service fee, a handling fee or a membership fee to buy, that fee has to be included in the price shown.

For most product stores this is straightforward, since shipping and tax are excluded from the rule. It matters more for businesses that add a compulsory fee at checkout, such as a processing fee, a delivery service charge on local orders or a fee on event and class tickets.

We review your checkout for any mandatory charge, change how prices are displayed where needed and make sure promotional prices in emails, ads and product feeds are consistent with the site. Your attorney should confirm how the law applies to your pricing.

How should subscriptions be set up for California customers?

Subscribe-and-save is popular with LA coffee, supplement, skincare and pet brands, and California regulates it closely. The state's automatic renewal law requires the terms of the offer to be clear and conspicuous before purchase, the customer's affirmative consent to those terms, an acknowledgment that explains how to cancel and, for subscriptions bought online, a way to cancel online without being forced to call or chat. Amendments that took effect in July 2025 added further requirements, including reminders and cancellation steps.

In practice the subscription option on the product page states the price, the frequency and that it renews until cancelled. A checkbox records consent. The confirmation email repeats the terms. The customer's account page has a cancel button that works in a few clicks.

We configure subscription apps to meet these points and test the cancellation path ourselves. Your attorney should review the wording.

  • Renewal terms stated clearly next to the price.
  • An unticked consent box at checkout.
  • A confirmation email with the terms and cancellation steps.
  • Online cancellation that takes no more than a few clicks.

How do you prepare a store for creator-driven launches?

Many LA brands sell through creators. A single video can send thousands of visitors to one product page within minutes, nearly all of them on phones, many arriving inside the social app's own browser. If the page is slow, the size chart is buried or checkout asks for an account, most of that attention is lost.

We build product pages that work for a visitor who knows nothing about the brand: clear photos, the price, key details and reviews in the first screen, and express checkout with Apple Pay, Google Pay and Shop Pay. Creator collaborations get their own landing pages and discount codes, so you can see which partner brought which sales.

For limited drops we add countdowns, waitlists, quantity limits and protection against bots, and we rehearse the launch on a hidden product beforehand. A developer is available during the launch hour, whenever that falls.

Which fulfillment and logistics setup suits an LA brand?

Southern California has a dense network of warehouses and third-party logistics providers, partly because of the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which together form the busiest container port complex in the United States. Brands that import goods often store them nearby and ship across the country from the region.

The store has to pass orders to that warehouse automatically, receive tracking numbers back and keep stock levels accurate across channels. We connect your store to ShipStation, ShipBob or your 3PL's own system, and to QuickBooks or another accounting platform. If you also sell on Amazon, Walmart or TikTok Shop, inventory is synchronized so that one sale is not sold twice.

Shipping from the West Coast takes longer to reach the East Coast, so we display honest delivery estimates by region, which reduces support emails and abandoned carts.

Which platform should an LA brand use?

For most direct-to-consumer brands, Shopify is the practical choice: reliable at peak traffic, strong for subscriptions and creator programs, and well supported by the apps brands use. Our Shopify development in Los Angeles page goes into detail.

WooCommerce suits brands whose site is also a publication or that need unusual product rules. A headless or custom build makes sense for brands with large catalogs, complex customization, such as made-to-order apparel, or an existing enterprise system to integrate.

We recommend a platform after reviewing your catalog, margins, team and growth plans, and we explain the running costs, including apps and payment fees, before you commit. The wider comparison is on our ecommerce website development in the USA page.

What makes product pages convert for LA shoppers?

A product page has to stand in for touching the product. For apparel that means several photos on different body types, the model's size and height, a size guide in inches and clear fabric details. For skincare and supplements it means ingredients, how to use the product and any required warnings, stated plainly. Reviews from real customers, with photos where possible, do more than any description.

Pages must also be accessible. Online stores are a frequent target of accessibility claims in California, where the Unruh Civil Rights Act allows statutory damages. We build product pages, filters and checkout to WCAG 2.2 AA, with descriptive image text and keyboard access throughout.

As an illustration, a swimwear brand in Venice might show each style on three models, list the fabric and care, link to a fit quiz and state the return window beside the add-to-cart button. Each of those answers a question that otherwise sends a shopper away.

How does a remote ecommerce project run?

We begin with a call in one of our Pacific Time windows and a review of how you sell now, including channels, apps, fees and pain points. The proposal sets out the platform, pages, integrations and a fixed price in dollars.

Design and development happen on a preview store you can open on your phone. Before launch we place test orders across scenarios: different California cities for tax, an out-of-state order, a subscription and its cancellation, a product with a warning and a discount code from a creator campaign.

We do not have a Los Angeles office and will not see your studio or warehouse. We ask for photos, packaging samples and time with whoever handles fulfillment, so that the store matches how your business really operates.

Pricing & engagement

How do pricing and engagement work?

Store builds and migrations are quoted as a fixed price in US dollars and paid in milestones. The main factors are the platform, the number of custom templates, the state of your product data and the systems to connect. Platform fees, apps, payment processing and tax services are paid by you directly and listed in the proposal so there are no surprises. After launch, a monthly plan covers changes, seasonal campaigns and support during launches.
