Quick answer

A website that gets visitors but no enquiries usually has one of five problems: the wrong visitors, an unclear offer, too much effort to contact you, too little proof that you are trustworthy, or slow follow-up. Fix them in that order: check where traffic comes from, say what you do in one line, add tap-to-call and WhatsApp, show real work and reviews, and reply within minutes.

Key Takeaways

  • No enquiries is a symptom. Find the cause first: wrong traffic, unclear offer, hard to contact, low trust or slow follow-up.
  • Most Indian visitors arrive on a phone. Tap-to-call and a WhatsApp button on every page are the cheapest fixes with the biggest effect.
  • The first screen must say what you do, for whom and where, in plain words. Visitors decide in seconds.
  • Short forms win. Ask only for what you need to reply: name, phone and one question.
  • Real proof beats claims: photographs of your work, named client projects, genuine Google reviews and clear prices or price ranges.
  • Track calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions as key events in Google Analytics, or you are guessing.
  • An enquiry answered in five minutes is worth far more than one answered tomorrow.

Why does a website get visitors but no enquiries?

It is one of the most common complaints we hear from business owners in Pune and across India. The website looks fine. Google Analytics shows a few hundred visitors a month. The phone does not ring and the contact form stays empty.

The good news is that the cause is rarely mysterious. In our experience it is almost always one of five things, and each has a practical fix. The visitors are the wrong people. The visitors do not understand what you offer. They understand it but contacting you takes too much effort. They can contact you but do not trust you enough yet. Or they did enquire, and nobody replied in time.

This guide goes through fifteen fixes grouped under those five causes, with examples from websites we have built. Work through them in order. There is no point redesigning the contact form if the traffic is coming from people in another country searching for something else.

Cause 1: Are the right people visiting your website?

Before changing anything on the website, look at who is arriving and why. A site with 300 visitors from the right city searching for your service will produce more enquiries than a site with 3,000 visitors from everywhere.

Fix 1: Check where your traffic comes from. In Google Analytics, look at the traffic acquisition report and the location report. If a large share comes from other countries, from a blog post that ranks for an unrelated topic, or from a social media post that went viral for the wrong reason, those visitors were never going to enquire. That is not a website problem.

Fix 2: Check what people searched to find you. Google Search Console, which is free, shows the search terms that bring visitors. If you sell commercial interiors in Pune and most of your clicks come from people searching for home decor ideas, the content is attracting browsers, not buyers. The fix is to create pages for the searches your buyers actually make, such as office interior designer in Pune, and to strengthen the ones you have. Our local SEO checklist explains how to rank for searches in your own area.

Fix 3: Check paid campaigns separately. If you run Google or Meta ads, look at their visitors on their own. Broad keywords, wide locations and boosted posts are common sources of visitors who click and leave. Our comparison of Google Ads and Meta Ads explains which platform suits which business.

TIP

Open Search Console, go to Performance and sort by clicks. Read the top twenty search terms aloud. If you would not want most of those people as customers, start with content, not design.

Cause 2: Do visitors understand what you offer in five seconds?

People do not read websites. They scan the first screen and decide whether to stay. If that screen shows a stock photograph and a slogan such as Excellence in every solution, a visitor learns nothing and leaves.

Fix 4: Rewrite the first screen. The headline should say what you do, for whom and where, in words your customer would use. CCTV, solar and electrical work in Sinnar and Nashik district is far stronger than Your trusted technology partner. Below it, one sentence on what makes you the right choice, and a button to call or message.

Fix 5: Give each service its own page. A single Services page listing ten things forces the visitor to work out whether you do what they need. A page for each main service, answering the questions customers ask on the phone, both converts better and ranks better in Google. A dentist should have separate pages for root canal treatment, braces and implants, each with what it involves, how long it takes and what affects the cost.

Fix 6: Talk about price. Many Indian businesses hide prices because every job is different. Visitors read that as expensive, or as a sign that they will be pressured. You do not need a rate card. A starting price, a typical range or an honest explanation of what decides the price is enough to keep serious buyers on the page and filter out those who cannot afford you. Our website development cost guide is an example of how we explain our own pricing without a rate card.

Cause 3: Is it easy to contact you from a phone?

Most visitors to a local business website in India arrive on a mobile phone. Every extra tap, every form field and every second of loading time loses some of them.

Fix 7: Make the phone number tap-to-call. The number should be a link that opens the dialler when tapped, visible at the top of every page and again at the bottom. It sounds obvious, and a surprising number of business sites still show the number as an image or plain text that cannot be tapped.

Fix 8: Add a WhatsApp button. Many Indian customers would much rather send a WhatsApp message than fill in a form or make a call, especially to ask a price. WhatsApp's click to chat feature lets you link to a chat with your business number, and you can include a pre-filled message such as Hi, I would like a quote for. Put the button where thumbs reach it, usually fixed at the bottom of the screen on mobile.

Fix 9: Shorten the form. Ask only for what you need to reply: name, phone number and one question about what they need. Every additional field, such as company name, budget or address, reduces the number of people who finish. You can collect the rest on the call. Make sure the form shows a clear thank-you message and tells the visitor when you will reply.

Fix 10: Make the site fast on mobile data. A page that takes many seconds to appear on a 4G connection loses visitors before they see your offer. Large photographs that have not been compressed are the usual cause, followed by sliders, heavy themes and too many plugins. Google's guidance treats a main content load within 2.5 seconds as good. Our website speed optimisation service covers the technical side.

  • Phone number that dials when tapped, at the top of every page.
  • WhatsApp button with a pre-filled message.
  • Forms with three fields, not ten.
  • A thank-you message that says when you will reply.
  • Pages that load quickly on mobile data.

Cause 4: Do visitors trust you enough to contact you?

Contacting a business feels like a small commitment. People hesitate if they are not sure you are real, established and good at what you do. Trust is built with evidence, not adjectives.

Fix 11: Show your real work. Photographs of completed projects, your premises, your team and your equipment do more than any stock image. Name your clients where they agree, and explain what you did for them. Case studies with the problem, the work and the result are the strongest proof a service business can publish. You can see how we present our own work in our portfolio.

Fix 12: Show genuine reviews. Google reviews carry particular weight because visitors know a business cannot edit them. Link to your Google Business Profile, show a few recent reviews on the site and keep collecting new ones by asking every satisfied customer. Never buy reviews or offer discounts for them: Google prohibits incentives for reviews and removes such reviews.

Fix 13: Make the business look real. A full address, a map, registered business name, GST number where relevant, years in business and the names and faces of the people who will do the work all reduce doubt. So does a professional email address on your own domain instead of a free webmail address.

Cause 5: What happens after someone enquires?

Sometimes the website is working and the leak is after it. An enquiry arrives at an inbox nobody checks, or is answered the next day, by which time the customer has called a competitor.

Fix 14: Reply within minutes. For most local services, the first business to reply wins the job. Send form submissions to a phone, not only to email. Set up WhatsApp Business quick replies for common questions. If nobody can answer during busy hours, an automatic message saying when you will call back is better than silence. Our marketing automation service sets up these flows.

Fix 15: Track every enquiry. Set up Google Analytics so that phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions are recorded as key events. Google renamed conversions to key events in 2024, and you can mark any event as a key event in the admin settings. Then keep a simple register of every enquiry with its source and whether it became a customer. After two or three months you will know which pages, campaigns and channels bring business, and which only bring visitors. If you want this done properly, see our GA4 setup service.

WARNING

If you add session recording or heatmap tools, mask form fields and personal details, and mention the tool in your privacy notice. India's data protection law applies to what visitors type into your site. Our DPDP Act checklist explains the basics.

Real examples: what this looks like on websites we built

Three projects from our portfolio show these fixes in practice. We describe what we built, not results we cannot verify.

For Hotel Adhiras, on the Narayangaon to Ozar road near the Ozar Ganpati temple, the visitor is usually a pilgrim or a family planning a trip. The first lines of the site say what the hotel is near, each of the four room types has its own Book Now button, and a map and enquiry form sit on the same page. The visitor never has to hunt for how to book.

For Shruti IT Service, a CCTV, solar and electrical contractor in Sinnar, the site names each line of work and the area it serves, and the name, address and phone number match its Google Business Profile exactly. The owner told us the business went on to win larger clients after the new site and profile went live.

For Shriram Industries, a bottle manufacturer selling to other businesses, a buyer can customise a bottle in 3D before enquiring. That is an unusual feature, and it answers the buyer's biggest question, what will it look like, before they have to ask.

How do you find out where visitors give up?

Two free tools show you what visitors actually do, which is often different from what you assume.

Google Analytics shows which pages people land on, how far they get and which pages they leave from. If most visitors land on a service page and leave without visiting the contact page, the service page is not persuading them. If many reach the contact page and few submit the form, the form is the problem.

Microsoft Clarity, which is free, records anonymised sessions and produces heatmaps showing where people tap and how far they scroll. Watching ten recordings of real visitors on a phone is often the fastest way to spot a problem: a button that looks tappable but is not, a pop-up that covers the form, a menu that hides the phone number.

Make one change at a time and give it a few weeks before judging. Changing everything at once leaves you unable to tell which change helped.

A quick self-audit you can do today

Take your phone, switch off Wi-Fi and open your own website as a customer would. Answer these questions honestly.

  • Did the first screen appear in under three seconds?
  • Could you tell what the business does, for whom and where, without scrolling?
  • Could you call or WhatsApp with one tap?
  • Did you see a real photograph of the work or the team?
  • Did you see a review or a named client?
  • Could you find a price, a range or an explanation of cost?
  • Is the contact form three or four fields long?
  • After submitting it, did you know when you would hear back?
  • Would the person who receives the enquiry see it within ten minutes?

Should you redesign the website or fix the existing one?

Fix first, redesign only if the foundation is broken. Most of the fifteen fixes above, such as tap-to-call, a WhatsApp button, a shorter form, a clearer headline, real photographs and tracking, can be added to an existing site in days.

A redesign makes sense when the site is built on a platform you cannot edit, is too slow to fix without rebuilding, does not work properly on phones, or no longer reflects what the business does. If you do redesign, protect the search rankings you already have. Our website redesign SEO checklist covers the steps, and our website redesign service explains how we approach it.

If your traffic is too low to judge anything, the problem is visibility, not conversion. Start with our digital marketing plan for small businesses in India.

Want a second opinion on your website?

We review business websites from Pune for companies across India and tell owners plainly what is stopping enquiries and what to fix first. Send us your website address through the contact page, with a line about what you sell and who your customers are, and we will reply in writing. You can read about our conversion rate optimisation and landing page design services, or see what clients have said on our customer feedback page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my website getting traffic but no enquiries?

Usually because the visitors are the wrong people, the offer is unclear, contacting you takes too much effort, there is too little proof to trust you, or enquiries are answered too slowly. Check your traffic sources first, then the first screen, contact options and proof.

How can I get more enquiries from my website?

Say clearly what you do and where on the first screen, add tap-to-call and a WhatsApp button, shorten your form, show real work and Google reviews, give a price range, and reply to every enquiry within minutes.

Should I add a WhatsApp button to my business website?

Yes, for most Indian businesses. Many customers prefer to message rather than call or fill in a form. Use WhatsApp's click to chat link with a pre-filled message and place the button where it is easy to tap on a phone.

How many fields should a contact form have?

As few as you need to reply, usually three: name, phone number and a short message. Each extra field reduces the number of people who complete the form.

How do I track enquiries from my website?

In Google Analytics, record phone clicks, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions as events and mark them as key events. Also keep a register of each enquiry, its source and whether it became a customer.

Does website speed affect enquiries?

Yes. Visitors on mobile data leave slow pages before they see your offer. Compressing images, removing heavy sliders and unnecessary plugins, and using good hosting usually make the biggest difference.

Do I need to redesign my website to get more leads?

Often not. Many fixes, such as clearer headlines, contact buttons, shorter forms, proof and tracking, can be added to an existing site. Redesign when the platform is too slow, hard to edit or broken on phones.
